Why You Need Write the Room Activities in Your Classroom

Phonics and writing are both incredibly important. You want to give your students several opportunities to practice letter formation, spelling, and more! What if I told you there was a simple way you can do that and all you need is a little prep time and printer? When you use a write the room activity, your students will get effective practice that will help them be stronger, more confident readers and writers!

What is Write the Room?

Write the room is a fun activity for students to get up and walk about the room while practicing their fine motor skills, letter recognition, vocabulary, and more! Write the room takes some set up. However, it’s well worth it!

To use a write the room activity in your classroom, all you need to do is hang different cards around the room. Then, your students move around the space and record what they find on the cards around the room on their recording sheet.

What does this mean for you? This means you just have to find the time to hang up cards around the room and print out some recording sheets. If you like using a write the room activity in your classroom, you can make this set up easier by laminating your write the room cards and having extra copies of the recording sheets readily available!

Why Use Write the Room Activities

Using a write the room activity has so many benefits! These benefits include:

  • Getting up and moving
  • Chart practice
  • Fine motor skills
  • Academic practice

To start, your students can get up and out of their desks. When we are teaching elementary students, we are asking them to sit at their desks all day long. Having an activity to get them up and moving is a great way to activate the brain and engage your students. With this, you’ll want to make sure you have clear classroom expectations for your write the room activity time. This will help students stay on task the entire time.

Besides getting up and moving, this activity is great for learning how to use charts! Students have to locate what they are seeing on their chart and put it in the corresponding box. Not only does this help with creating a chart, it can also help students understand how to read them later on. When you look at state tests, charts are a common theme.

Write the room activities are great for fine motor skills as well. Having students practice writing their letters, vocabulary words, numbers, and more are a great way to practice how to hold a pencil. This extra practice will make them stronger writers later on.

Finally, you need to use write the room to practice academic skills. From letter and number recognition to vocabulary words, you can use a write the room activity to reinforce valuable academic skills your students will need.

The best part of write the room is once you teach it, you don’t have to reteach how to complete the task. The predictable expectation makes this something you can use with a variety of subjects and levels of difficulty.
